Silk Road Basis of China-Arab Collaboration

June 5, 2014 (2014)— Chinese President Xi Jinping today urged win-win cooperation between China and Arab states to promote the "spirit of the Silk Road" at the opening ceremony of the sixth ministerial conference of the China-Arab States Cooperation Forum (CASCF) held in Beijing.

"What China pursues is common development. We want to achieve development for ourselves and we want to enable others to grow as well," he said. The forum will mainly focus on the building of the Silk Road economic belt and the 21st century maritime Silk Road as well as promoting mutual development, Xinhua said.

Xi’s concrete proposals include:

  • "Deepened cooperation for the whole industrial chain of oil and natural gas, ensure safety of the energy transport routes and establish a mutually beneficial, safe and reliable China-Arab strategic cooperative relationship,"

  • "Dncourage Chinese companies to import more non-petroleum products from Arab states to improve trade mix and raise the two-way trade volume from $240 billion last year to $600 billion in the coming decade,

  • "Dstablish practical cooperation in the three high-tech areas of nuclear energy, aerospace [including] satellite[s] and new energy."
